A Water Resources Management Project for Mountain Communities

Project Duration: 11 Months

Objective:

 Improvement in crop yield on existing land restoring barren land for cultivation will ensure food security and improved health and nutrition

  • “Whole of Community” approach to socio-economic growth and environmental conservation
  • Efficient use of water resources to enhance socio economic and environmental well-being of disadvantaged communities with gender equity
  • Community stewardship in sustainable use of water for replenishment benefits to man and nature
  • Develop synergistic linkages between local authorities and local communities for climate compatible development

Result:

  • Irrigation water supply scheme with one collection chamber, catchment chamber, outlet water channel chamber, one water storage tank
  • 12900 RFT underground pipe
  • 2832 population (household 354) (Male 1388- Female 1444) as beneficiary
  • One Community organization with 22 members (11 male- 11 female)
  • 266 hectares of land converted into farmland with landscaping plan
  • 2.202 billion liters will be captured but only 1.101 will go back to nature and community as 50% will be lost in seepage and evaporation during transmission without paved channel.

Major Activities undertaken: 

Share project information and build consensus between stakeholders on project deliverables, Community Organization formation, build capacity of Community Organization (CO)

  • Develop project technical feasibility and design, construction of piped irrigation scheme
  • Improved water availability for productive use
  • Irrigation water supply scheme with one collection chamber, catchment chamber, outlet water channel chamber, one storage tank
  • 12900 RFT underground pipe, 303.5 hectares of land provided with reliable source of water for agriculture activities
  • Raise awareness and disseminate information about climate smart mitigation and adaptation approaches with gender equity
  • 3 Meetings with community and relevant govt department to develop consensus on project activities in target school.
  • Signing of terms of partnership (TOP) with Community Organization.
  • Monitoring visits by MGPO staff, relevant govt department and CO.
  • Survey of project input, outcomes and final report compilation.
  • Project completion & handing over project to CO.
