Strengthening Community Based Disaster Preparedness and Response

Project Duration:  09 Months

Objective:

 Formation of Community based Disaster Defense Committees (DDCs) who are trained in basic evacuation drills, first aid, and are able to lead early warning efforts in their communities

  • Linking DDCs with local authorities and other district level disaster management institutions for coordination, and timely and effective response to disasters.

Result:

Disaster Defense Committees formed in Muzaffarabad with 10 Village Disaster Defense Committees, 4 UC Disaster Defense Committees, 1 Tehsil Disaster Defense Committees and 1 District Disaster Defense Committees;

  • Basic Vulnerability/Hazard and Capacity Profiles developed for each district
  • DDCs trained on basic first response to disasters
  • DDC communication mechanism for emergency response developed
  • DDC evacuation strategy and plan developed for each district
  • DDC forum with skills and improved capacity for disaster response
  • Role of women made part of DDC
