Baltoro Cleanup Campaign

Duration: 3 Months

Objective:

Promoting a balance between human activity and the natural environment. 

Result:

Provide mechanism that reduce pollution and create sustainable waste management systems to protect eco- fragile areas.   Helping marginalized communities develop alternative sources of income.  Training and empowering communities to safeguard their natural resource heritage.  Facilitating coordination between local communities and government departments.  

Major Activities undertaken:

5000kg non-biodegradable waste (eg, tin cans, plastic wrappers and batteries) collected and dispatched for recycling.  1000 kg human waste collected and buried on site.  4 animal carcasses carried off glacier and disposed of.  2 fiberglass toilets installed at campsites.  2 fiberglass waste receptacles installed at campsites.    Workshops held in different villages to emphasize importance of community involvement in conservation efforts.  Community –based organization formed to take responsibility for proposed campsites.
